OLFU QC Biology Students Thesis Reproduction Grant Awardee

Six young researchers from the College of Arts and Sciences BS Biology program of Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) – Quezon City Campus demonstrated strong probing skills after being named as Thesis Reproduction Grant Awardee during the 52nd Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. on July 20-21, 2023.

The comprehensive paper “Quantification of Histamine Concentration and Identification of Histamine-Forming Bacteria on Auxis rochei (Risso, 1810)” earned the nod of the science community, acknowledging the brilliant minds of Sophia Delos Santos, Gelian Bastian, Jimson Deyta, El-Jay Managuelod, Daniel Lance Nevado, and Jamil Allen Fortaleza who are collaborative proponents of the study.

Among these young aspiring biologists is Fortaleza, a member of the group, who led the exhaustive presentation of their research in the “Best Poster Competition” (Non-Professional Category).

Guided by the mentorship of Dr. Rener De Jesus, research adviser; and Dr. Ramonita Salazar, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the exceptional group is now an inspiration to their peers and both the scientific and academic community as they showcased their dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence in contributing resources to the academe.

Additionally, the publication of “Detection, Identification, and Inactivation of Histamine-forming Bacteria in Seafood: A Mini-review” in the Elsevier Journal of Food Protection stands as a testament to the capability of the next generation of scientists. Through their meticulous research, thoughtful analysis, and passion for advancing food safety, these students have etched their names in the annals of scientific progress.

Needless to say, the achievements further underscore the potential for collaborative efforts, especially among young minds, to reshape the boundaries of scientific knowledge and contribute to practical applications.

As their achievements reverberate beyond academia, they are powerful reminders that the pursuit of knowledge knows no boundaries and that with determination, innovation, and a commitment to bettering society, even young minds can make an indelible impact on the realm of scientific exploration.

The Biology Program researchers of OLFU Quezon City could only express their gratitude for the opportunity and unwavering support of the school administration led by Dean Salazar; the Research Development and Innovation Center (RDIC) headed by Dr. Michael Joseph Diño; Assistant Research Director Trisha Gotinga; and the Natural Science Department Coordinator Zandra Salut.
